The search box is changing. For years, the Google Search interface was essentially a small box for typing a few keywords. In May 2026, Google called its new Search design the biggest upgrade to the search box in more than 25 years. Instead of a short input field, the new Search is built so that people can describe what they need at greater length, continue the conversation and bring in different kinds of data such as text, images, files, video or a Chrome tab.

Businesses invest in SEO to improve rankings, better rankings bring more visits, and those visits are expected to convert into customers. But as AI appears more and more inside the search journey itself, this seemingly stable relationship is beginning to change.

For more than two decades, SEO ran on a fairly stable logic: a user asks Google a question, the search engine returns a list of results, and the user picks a website to read further. Businesses therefore competed for the top positions, because a good ranking usually meant more visits and, from there, more sales opportunities.
